How executive search firm Boyden World Corporation (BWC) built a thriving IT remote workforce in Mexico

As a premier executive search firm with offices spanning Canada, Germany, the UK, and the US, Boyden World Corporation (BWC) identified Mexico as its preferred market for strategic expansion.

To establish a firm foothold in this new territory, it needed to establish a compliant operational setup for its new specialized recruitment office. The intricacies of local labor laws presented a point of friction, from requirements for wet signatures, to remote-work-specific compensation structures.

However, by working with an infrastructure partner, BWC was able to manage employment logistics seamlessly and avoid the headache of setting up its own local entity – enabling seamless cross-border expansion vital to its commercial growth plans.

Local compensation & compliance structures

“Wet signatures are best practice on contract offers in Mexico. That was facilitated as part of the onboarding process.”

Gary PikulGary Pikul, Chief Technology Officer

Expanding into Mexico presented specific statutory and cultural requirements.

Under Mexican labor law, although electronic signatures are legally recognized in Mexico, wet ink signatures remain the gold standard and are highly recommended.

Local compensation structures, meanwhile, often involve specific remote work allowances, such as internet connectivity stipends and monthly meal funds.

Professional talent in Mexico also relies heavily on private healthcare networks over national insurance systems, requiring customizable coverage tiers to suit diverse employee demographics.

For BWC, maintaining 100% compliance across these unique local regulations was essential to protecting their business and providing a premium employee experience.

To manage this in-house would have compromised the pace of expansion.

Moreover, it would have left the firm’s leadership focused on administrative issues rather than proactive performance management and support for the newly hired team, threatening engagement, productivity, and retention.

BWC builds a high-touch remote culture

BWC therefore selected to work with a partner to handle the local compliance, payroll execution, and employee benefits administration for its expansion into Mexico.

It selected Multiplier to absorb the legal risk, statutory reporting, and benefit structures, giving leaders like Pikul the time and freedom to establish deliberate communication frameworks with remote employees, ensuring they felt supported and engaged.

“We needed to separate the working relationship with Multiplier – all of the legal, payroll, compliance, and benefits issues – from what we were doing with our people.”

He advised other employers looking to take a similar approach, investing time in careful management and support:

“How are you managing the people who are doing the work?”

To drive performance and alignment across distributed teams, Pikul recommends a structured remote management cadence. “It should be regular – weekly or multiple times a week – cross-team working sessions, alongside monthly one-on-ones with people focused on career development and training requirements,” he explains. “And then you have to get a coffee to just talk every now and then.”

Meanwhile, BWC could trust that Multiplier had already picked up the fundamental legal and compliance requirements from the beginning of the partnership. “That was facilitated as part of the onboarding process,” says Pikul.

Specific local nuances around benefits were also addressed through Multiplier’s platform.

“There’s a concept of employees in Mexico having a lunch fund,” the CTO continues. “We bundle it all into a flat fee that gets paid on top of the salary each month.”

No compliance issues, higher engagement

“We’ve had no compliance issues at all, whatsoever.”

Gary PikulGary Pikul, Chief Technology Officer

By recognizing that long-term global expansion requires a clear distinction between EOR platform administration and proactive team management, BWC has given itself a firm bedrock for successful expansion in the region.

Partnering with Multiplier has enabled the executive search company to maintain flawless operational compliance in Mexico.

“From a compliance perspective, we haven’t had any issues or concerns. Multiplier has been very supportive,” says Pikul. “We have had some proactive conversations with our account team, so we know what would happen if we ever got into that situation. But so far, we’ve had no compliance issues at all, whatsoever.”

This has made all the difference for the company, with managers given the capacity to focus on the all-important task of managing the remote workforce.

“They require a higher touch, a higher level of engagement,” Pikul reiterates.

The successful approach is now a blueprint for BWC as it evaluates expansion into new regions.

We’re constantly evaluating where we need to provide BWC IT staff or if we need any additional locations or coverage, and we would certainly want to leverage the partnership we already have with Multiplier,” Pikul concludes.
