Employee Contract

Employment contracts in Ghana are written in English. According to the Ghana Labor law, the employer has to mention details of the job role, leaves, bonuses, allowances and hours of work along with the overtime pay on the contract.

Probation Period

The probationary period for employees in Ghana is at the employer’s discretion. However, it should be in accordance with local labor laws.

Payroll Cycle

The payroll cycle followed in Ghana is monthly, however it is common for companies to pay their employees every 2 weeks. Companies usually pay their employees by the last day of the month.

The minimum wage in Ghana is GHS 14.88 per day.

Overtime Pay

The standard working hours in Ghana are 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. The law does not fix the rate of overtime remuneration. However, below are the rates that employees generally receive for overtime hours.


13th-Month Pay

The standard rate is 12.5%.

Offboarding & Termination

The Termination process is based on the type of contract and reason for termination. Termination can be done through written notice by either party given proper reasoning. Below are some examples of improper termination. If the employee

  • intends to join a trade union
  • is pregnant or is absent due to maternity leave
  • is terminated for the reason of race or religion
  • is disabled
  • is forced to terminate due to inappropriate action of the employer after lodging multiple harassment complaints

The Notice period for Ghanaian employees can be up to one month.

There is a provision for redundancy pay subject to negotiation between the employer and the worker or trade union. In case of dismissals for non-economic reasons, there is no severance pay.

Visa and Immigration

A foreigner planning to work in Ghana must apply for a work permit in Ghana Immigration Services (GIS). Employers usually submit the application requirements to the GIS before their employees reach the country to work. The validity of the work permit is one year, further can be renewed and extended.
